How to Use Departmental Mission Statements to Drive Your IT Practices

How to Use Departmental Mission Statements to Drive Your IT Practices

The mission statement is an important part of any business which guides its practices, but it doesn’t have to do so at a macro level. You can implement mission statements for your various departments, including your IT department. Let’s go over how you can craft the best mission for your IT team so they can keep working to make your operations as effective as possible.

First, let’s establish a little context by discussing the generalized mission statement, then we’ll go into how you can implement a more specific one for your IT.

What Does a Mission Statement Do?

In more general terms, a mission statement will condense three important parts of your business into a communicative and accessible format:

  1. What your company stands for and strives to accomplish
  2. How your company intends to accomplish these goals
  3. Who the company wants to serve as they do so

When you combine these factors into a mission statement, you can give your company direction and inform your clients of what your organizational priorities are. This also helps to provide your employees and partners more of an idea of how they can contribute to this mission. Basically, it’s a way to guide your organization’s actions, and it can even be seen as a rallying cry for your team to unite it around specific goals.

Team Mission Statements Are More Complex

A team’s mission statement might be more specific rather than looking at things at the larger or more overarching scale. You can think about it like how a department might contribute toward the overarching mission statement. Therefore, your department’s mission statement should be in line with the business’ more broadly defined mission statement.

For instance, let’s say that ACME is in the business of producing and distributing widgets. ACME’s mission statement might be something along the lines of, “Improving processes and productivity for individuals by providing them with a widget that solves the problems they face.” ACME’s individual departments could each have their own mission statement that describes how they each contribute to this shared goal.

Design Your IT Team’s Mission Statement

In order to put together a solid departmental mission statement, you first need to determine what your IT department, including its resources and its workers, can do to support your overarching mission statement. Once you have that identified, you just have to put these intentions into words that will help to drive action and provide direction.

Does Your Team Need Support to Accomplish This Mission?

If your IT department experiences difficulty while working toward its goals, then perhaps it’s an issue of staffing not keeping up with the growth of the business. This often happens with small or medium-sized businesses that grow rapidly and ultimately wind up understaffed as a result. Make sure your team has the resources they need to support your mission statement, and ensure they have the knowledge to support it to the best of their abilities as well.

Of course, KB Technologies is happy to help support your team’s mission through the use of our managed IT services. To learn more, contact us at (954) 834-2800 today.
