New Technology Is Often Bloated

New Technology Is Often Bloated

Imagine this scenario: you have just purchased a new computer, and you boot it up all excited to get right into setting it up, only to find that it is extremely slow and bogged down by all kinds of applications you didn’t know were pre-installed on it. This type of unwanted software can be a problem, especially for businesses when they want to get their new technology up and running as soon as possible.

What is Bloatware?

Bloatware can be defined as any application that comes pre-installed on the device (i.e. not installed by the user) and is available upon startup. Bloatware can include free trials of software solutions, a tactic that software developers use to get their products in front of the crowd, as well as system utilities or applications that are included with the installation of the operating system.

More than anything, you will notice bloatware when your system’s quality or performance speed starts to take a dip. It can create problems during startup, slowing down your progress and making your day-to-day tasks more difficult, and it can even take up storage space that could be better spent on applications you actually want to use. Generally speaking, bloatware is more of an inconvenience than a true threat, but if left unchecked it can and will become dangerous.

In worst-case scenarios, bloatware can even be threatening to the user, as was seen by the Lenovo man-in-the-middle attacks several years ago. It’s also important to keep in mind that bloatware is, indeed, software installed on your device, meaning that it needs to be kept up-to-date if you don’t want it to become a security risk down the road.

Bloatware can also include adware and other types of bothers that come pre-installed on the device with the intention of making more of a profit off the user. It’s a slimy tactic to be sure, but don’t worry—there are ways to get rid of it!

How Can You Get Rid of It?

It’s not always easy to tell what is bloatware and what isn’t, especially if you don’t necessarily have an eye for technology or software applications. The last thing you want to do is accidentally delete an application on your device which impacts its performance. That said, doing nothing is also incredibly frustrating, especially when the bloatware starts to impact your own work performance.

We recommend that you work with a trusted IT provider to handle uninstalling any applications on your business technology. It helps to have a professional on your side during this process so you know for sure that what you are doing is not going to impact your technology’s ability to perform in the long term.
